House fire claims two lives

MOULTRIE, Ga. — Two people died in a house fire Thursday morning on Black Acres Road.

Officials believe the victims are Phillip “Pat” Tomlinson and Jane Tomlinson, who lived in the house at 686 Black Acres Road, but Colquitt County Coroner Verlyn Brock said he hopes to have a positive identification through dental records on Monday.

State Safety Fire Commissioner Jim Beck said units of the county’s volunteer fire departments arrived on scene around 11 a.m. Thursday, but the fire had started much earlier.

“Due to the total destruction of the residence, a cause and origin is not able to be determined,” Beck said in a press release. “No wood was left intact. The fire occurred in the early morning hours and wasn’t discovered until 11 a.m.”

Investigators with the Safety Fire Commissioner’s Office assisted Colquitt County Fire Department and the Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office with this investigation.

In 2019, Georgia fires have already claimed the lives of 17 individuals, Beck said.
