Jackie Robinson Boys and Girls Club members headed to Braves game
CAIRO — The Atlanta Braves will host the Jackie Robinson Boys & Girls Club this weekend for a game against the New York Mets.
Braves partner FOX Sports South will send a charter bus to Washington Middle School on April 13 to pick up 44 Boys & Girls Club members and six chaperones at noon to bring them to suburban Atlanta.
The event is part of the Braves’ Jackie Robinson Day celebration, marking the day the Cairo-born player broke Major League Baseball’s color barrier, April 15, 1947.
“This is Jackie Robinson Day weekend, and what better way (to celebrate) than to invite the residents of where he was born up to an Atlanta Braves game?” said Stephen Francis, Boys & Girls Club director.
When the children arrive at SunTrust Park just north of Atlanta they will meet staff, tour the baseball facilities and take part in activities before the game begins at 7 p.m.
“They’ve got lots of goody bags and stuff waiting for them,” Francis said. “I was told they’ll have pizza waiting for them and they’re going to feed them.”
During the game the group will be wearing shirts, baseball caps and visors designed by the Ken Young Company for the trip featuring Robinson’s number 42.
Also attending the event will be Cairo Mayor Booker Gainor, who will join the group later in the day after attending a separate event in Athens, and Boys & Girls Club founding board member Charles Renaud.
The Braves will donate all proceeds from a raffle to the Boys & Girls Club April 16.
Francis said the kids at the Boys & Girls Club were excited for the opportunity.
“We’re going to go up there and represent our community and our Jackie Robinson Boys & Girls Club,” Francis said. “We’re going to show what Jackie Robinson means to us here and how much we celebrate him by showing a portion of the 120-plus kids that we have.”
