Rants and raves

• I read with interest the Saturday article regarding the use of SPLOST funds for paving. The article indicated the criteria for resurfacing is “based on the condition and daily traffic count on each section”. I find it interesting that The Fairways subdivision (Fairways Drive, Glen Eagle Circle and St. Andrews) will be resurfaced. I suppose the traffic count in this small subdivision, near the Country Club, exceeds that of Clay Street to MLK. The condition and traffic count along Clay Street is far worse and higher than The Fairways. Does this show a wise use of limited funds?

• Irma arrived just in time to get the attention of city and county leaders who are finalizing their SPLOST wish lists. We dodged the worst of the storm, but if we had been hit really hard, there would have been some serious suffering. Leaders need to include funds for generators and other equipment for our area’s strongest public buildings to prepare them to serve as shelters for those who live in mobile homes and for those who might lose housing in a future storm. Our sheltering capacity wood have proven inadequate if we had been hit harder.
