TPD Chief Rich speaking at international police chief event
THOMASVILLE — Thomasville Police Chief Troy Rich will speak Tuesday at the International Association of Police Chiefs (IAPC) in Orlando, Florida.
Rich is co-chairman of an IAPC planning committee charged with addressing terrorism and civil unrest in local communities.
“I will discuss ways to build community trust in the event of civil unrest in local jurisdictions,” Rich said.
His talk will refer to the Thomasville fatal shooting of a drug suspect by a local local enforcement officer in August 2017.
“It gives me some kind of background on building trust in our community prior to any potential civil unrest,” the chief said, adding that the shooting presented a new encounter for Thomasville police.
Also co-chairing the committee is Dr. Robert Friedmann, who Rich said is a world-renowned terrorism expert.
IAPC has 31,000 members from 50 countries.
President Donald Trump addressed the group Monday.
Rich said the organization is made up of thousands of police chiefs, police executive officers and police command staffs. Police officers from Africa, Canada, France and England are among the continents and countries represented at the Orlando event.
