Names released in deadly shooting Saturday at Dalton motel

DALTON, Ga. — The Dalton Police Department has released the names of the two people involved in the early Saturday morning shooting at a local motel that left one man dead.

Gregory Eugene Walker, 36, of Ringgold, died after being shot by Jaycob Rory Kelsey, 23, of Dalton, at Motel 6 at 2200 Chattanooga Road. No charges have been filed against Kelsey at this time and the investigation is ongoing, according to police.

“Early information indicated that the shooter could have been acting in self-defense, and so far the investigation would not appear to have developed information that that is not the case,” police spokesman Bruce Frazier said.

Kelsey has been cooperating with police during the investigation. Walker’s body has been taken to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab for an autopsy. Police do not believe the two knew each other.

“All indications are that these two people did not know each other at all and had no connection other than both staying in the same motel,” Frazier said.

Police were first called to the motel at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday after a disturbance in progress was reported. Walker was staying in a first floor room and called in a noise complaint about the rooms above his on the second floor. When officers arrived, they found the people in the rooms asleep and no evidence of a disturbance or excessive noise. After leaving, officers were called back to the motel when Walker complained about noise coming from a different room, which officers found was vacant.

At about 3:20 a.m., witnesses told police Walker still believed an upstairs occupant was making noise. He went upstairs and began banging on the door of room 226, trying to enter the room.

Witnesses told police Walker made threatening statements, saying he was going to “(expletive) them up.” Kelsey had a handgun and when Walker tried to force his way into the room, Kelsey shot Walker multiple times. He then gave aid to Walker, putting pressure on his wounds. A 911 call was made at 3:27 a.m. and officers and emergency medical services came to the motel. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives were brought in to investigate.
