Brookwood rallies late but falls on the road

WEWAHITCHKA, Florida — The Brookwood Warriors rallied to tie their season opener with the host Gators on Friday night, but Wewahitchka got a touchdown on the last play to pull out a 34-28 win.

The Warriors lost starting quarterback Rodge Waldrop to injury, and the Gators held a 28-6 lead late in the third quarter. The Warriors also lost senior Strong Beverly to injury.

But Destin Moore, pressed into quarterback duty — and having thrown a touchdown pass to Waldrop in the first quarter for the Warriors’ first score — sparked the comeback.

Collin Clark powered his way in to cut the lead to 28-14 and Moore’s 80-yard touchdown run brought the Warriors to within 28-20. Moore’s score on a keeper and the two-point play with under 6 minutes left tied the game.

Brookwood even recovered the onside kick but couldn’t take advantage.

The Warriors travel to play Lafayette (Florida) next.
