Sorority to celebrate Founders Day
Members of the Thomasville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. serving Colquitt, Grady and Thomas counties will celebrate Founders Day at 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 10 at First Missionary Baptist Church. The theme is “Thomasville Alumnae Chapter Celebrates 40 Years of Scholarship, Service and Sisterhood.”
The speaker is the Rev. Jaye Lynn Peabody Smith. She serves as the Southern Regional Chaplain for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.
Smith is a preacher, professor and inspirational speaker. She is a licensed professional and pastoral counselor and president/CEO of Peabody Practice LLC. She received a master of divinity in pastoral counseling and a master of science in clinical mental health from Mercer University. She also earned a master of public administration from New York University and is pursuing a doctor of ministry in pastoral counseling.
She is the recipient of various awards including the 2018 Dismas Charities Atlanta Women’s History Award, the 2014 Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. Trailblazer Award, the 2013 Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce Pinnacle Non-Profit of the Year Award and the 2010 Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. Southern Region Servant’s Heart Award.
Smith is associate minister at Redemptive Life Christian Fellowship. She is married to Tommie Smith and together they have a blended family of seven children.
The public is invited to attend according to Founders Day Chairperson Yvonne Armster. Louise Phillips serves as president of the Thomasville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.
The sorority was founded on Jan. 13, 1913 by 22 collegiate women at Howard University. Its mission is realized through a five-point programmatic thrust: Economic development, educational development, international awareness and involvement, physical and mental health, political awareness and involvement.
