Tucker named to Georgia College Athletics Hall of Fame

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — The Georgia College Department of Athletics is pleased to announce its 2017 class for the Georgia College Athletics Hall of Fame. The third of the four-member class is GC gymnastics standout Janelle Tucker.

A member of both the 1981 and 1982 NAIA National Championship Gymnastics teams, Tucker was an Individual National Champion in both of those seasons as well. The team co-captain was named an AIAW Small College All-American in 1979 and 1980, adding AIAW/NAIA All-America honors in 1981 and 1982 as well.

Tucker also earned the NAIA’s Nissen Outstanding National Gymnast of the Year Award in 1982 for her efforts off the playing surface.

Tucker will join previous inductees Jennifer Joiner from softball, Phil Arp, John Kurtz, Rusty Kea, Greg Winters, Chris Carr, Keith Slocumb and Tom Gorman from baseball, Duward Whelchel, Julia Roudkovskaya, Anna (Haggkvist) Sundstrom, Jay Torrence, Nancy Groesch, Lars Lindblom, Michelle Palethorpe and Lilia and Luiza Biktyakova from tennis, Robert Williams, Leonard Scott and Julius Joseph from men’s basketball, Sherita Ballard and Betty Jaynes from women’s basketball, David Robinson and Alex McMichael from golf, Missy (Thomas) Swicord, Geza Martiny and Yeini (Gutierrez) Thompson from gymnastics, broadcaster Scott MacLeod, former athletic director and golf coach Michael Peeler and former athletic director and basketball coach Stan Aldridge.

Tucker, former Athletic Director Floyd Anderson, Bobcat softball great Keidra Baitey and one other member will be honored as part of Homecoming Weekend Friday, Feb. 17. They will be recognized at a formal ceremony on campus with more details to follow, and again during the basketball doubleheader against Clayton State University Saturday, Feb. 18.
