Shiver to hold Fall Festival
Shiver School will be having their annual Fall Festival on Saturday, October 28 from 4-8 p.m. There will be plenty of activities for the whole family including balloon art, archery, a haunted house, laser tag, bingo, games and an auction. Those attending are encouraged to purchase raffle tickets to win a variety of prizes and enjoy South Georgia’s “Finest Fish Fry” to be served during the event. Local bank collecting canned goods
Ameris Bank in Cairo is holding its eighth annual Helping Fight Hunger Food Drive during October by collecting non-perishable food items for those in need. Customers, employees and members of the community are encouraged to make donations of canned and non-perishable food items in the collection box located inside the Ameris Bank on South Broad Street in Cairo. The bank will also accept monetary donations that will be given to the local food bank.
Morningstar Kiwanis to hold Extraordinary Citizens Banquet
The Cairo Kiwanis Morningstar Club will be holding its eighth annual Extraordinary Citizens Award Banquet this Thursday, October 19 at 7 p.m. The banquet will be held at the New Grady M.B. Association Building, which is at 204 Church St. in Cairo. A donation of $10 per person is requested for all those who plan to attend and tickets are available form Cairo Morningstar members.
Woman’s Club selling tickets for grocery raffle
The Cairo Woman’s Club in conjunction with Cairo IGA is currently selling raffle tickets for two changes to win $250 worth of groceries. Members will be selling the tickets through November 16 when two winners will be drawn at the store. Tickets are on sale for $5 each or five tickets for $20. Proceeds from the raffle will be used to support the Woman’s Club scholarship fund which provides a scholarship for two young people each year. Fall Choral Concert
The Grady County Fall Choral Concert is scheduled for Tuesday night, October 24 at the Cairo High School Auditorium beginning at 7 p.m. The concert will feature choirs from Eastside, Northside, and Southside Elementary Schools, Washington Middle School and Cairo High School. The choirs will also unite to perform this year’s theme song, “The Power of One.” Admission for the concert is $3 per adult.
6th Annual Race Against Violence to be held
Saving Grace will be hosting their 6th Annual Stepping Out Against Domestic Violence Walk/Run on Saturday, October 28. The event will begin and end at the Grady County Courthouse. Proceeds from the event will benefit victims of domestic violence. Awards will be given to the top runners in each age bracket. To register, call Nicole Lamoute at 224-3915 or None Brown at 977-4726.
Syrupmaker Touchdown Club having Christmas fundraiser
The 2017 Syrupmaker Touchdown Club is having a fundraiser to help support the CHS football team by selling fresh cut Christmas trees from North Carolina. The Fraser Fir trees will be available in 5-12-foot sizes and the club will also be selling holiday wreaths and garland. The trees will be delivered to Cairo High School on Saturday, November 25 and the deadline to place your order is October 27. Monument honoring Gold Star Mothers to be dedicated
A new monument honoring Gold Star Mothers will be dedicated on the Grady Courthouse Veterans Square on Saturday, October 21 at 10 a.m. Gold Star Mothers are those who have lost their sons or daughters in service of the U.S. armed forces. The dedication ceremony will be led by members of the American Legion and VFW with guest speaker Diane Ponder of Thomasville. There will be a three round rifle volley salute and the sounding of “Taps” will be featured as part of the dedication ceremony and everyone in the community is invited to attend.
Red Ribbon Week to be held October 22-28
October is Drug Awareness and Prevention Month and the Grady County Substance Abuse, Awareness and Prevention Council is planning a week of activities to help remind people of the dangers of drug and alcohol use. There will be special events in Grady County Schools each day of the week and a special prayer service to be held at the Grady County Courthouse on Wednesday, October 25 at noon. Whigham UMC to have Gospel Sing
The Whigham United Methodist Church will be hosting the Plath Family in concert on Sunday, October 22nd at 5 p.m. Barry and Kim Plath married in 1997 and together have nine children, all who play instruments and sing together. The 11 members of the family will be ministering in concert at the Whigham UMC during the evening services and everyone is invited to attend.
New activities at library for youngest patrons
The Roddenbery Memorial Library has a new “Mommy (or caretaker) & Me” class. Every week we will experience a new activity or developmentally appropriate craft for children birth to 12 months. The Book Baby class meets every Monday at 10 a.m. in the Children’s Room of the library.
Whigham School to have Fall Festival
The Whigham School invites everyone to attend its annual Fall Festival, which will be held on October 21 from 4-7 p.m. on the baseball field behind the school buildings. The event will feature lots of fun for the whole family such as a rock wall, bouncy houses, face painting, hay ride, carnival games, a silent auction, haunted hallway and a cake walk. There will be a variety of food available, as well as entertainment throughout the afternoon from the Off Broadstreet Center for the Dance Arts and the FIRM, Cairo Acrobatics and Lucretia’s School of Dance. Admission is free and everyone is invited to attend.
Georgia Park passes with stuffed backpacks
Grady County residents can check out a stuffed backpack kit at the Roddenbery Library and, in combination with an already available state ParkPass, take it with them on a free visit to any of Georgia’s state parks and historic sites. Each co-branded kit includes a sturdy, five-pocket backpack containing a pair of 5×30 binoculars, a guide to Georgia’s State Parks and Historic Sites and foldout Pocket Naturalist Guides to Georgia Wildlife, Georgia Birds and Georgia Trees & Wildflowers. The loan period for the backpack kit is one week, matching that of the ParkPass, which must be checked out separately. This is a wonderful backyard exploration kit
Applications being accepted for annual Christmas Parade
This year’s annual Cairo Christmas Parade will take place on Thursday, December 7 at 7 p.m. This year’s theme is “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year!” and this year’s parade will be the best one yet. Parade applications can be picked up at the Chamber for anyone interested! If you’d like for an application to be mailed to you, contact the Chamber with your information.

History Museum has First Families exhibit
The Grady County History Society is currently featuring the “Grady County’s First Families” exhibit, which features photos and memorabilia from some of the very first families who settled in what is now Grady County in the 1800s and early 1900s. The exhibit shows the various aspects of farming, family and social life among these earliest families. The exhibit will be on display for viewing through the first of December at the History Museum on North Broad Street which is open Tuesday through Fridays from 1-4 p.m. and the third and fourth Saturdays for each month from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Former Majorettes invited to participate in 70th anniversary
Alumni majorettes from Cairo High School are organizing a 70th anniversary celebration for October and all former twirlers are invited to participate. All former majorettes are asked to contribute memorabilia such as old photos, information or uniforms for display at Cairo High School and to participate in the performance by all former Syrupmakers majorettes during the halftime of the October 20 football game against Westover High School.
