Cairo teen dies in crash near Boston

THOMASVILLE — A 19-year-old Cairo woman died early Wednesday from injuries suffered in a crash on a private road off Old Quitman Road near Boston.

According to reports, Erica Atkinson, 170 Evergreen Lane, Cairo, was operating a 2013 Polaris Ranger and traveling north on the private road about 11:40 Wednesday night.

“There were five occupants,” said Sgt. 1st Class Tommy Peeples, Thomasville Post 12 Georgia State Patrol commander.

“She was operating the vehicle in a reckless manner. They were zigzagging back and forth, causing the vehicle to overturn,” Peeples said.

The driver was ejected and was struck by the Polaris. She was taken to Archbold Memorial Hospital, where she died.

Two passengers — Madison Kate Moore, 18, 1430 Lake Jenna Drive, Cairo, and Kaitlyn Noelle Butler, 21, 811 N. Pinetree Blvd. — were taken to Archbold by Thomas County Emergency Medical Service.

“It’s an unfortunate situation,” Peeples said. “Alcohol was involved.”
