Diving Tigers place first, win 11 titles at USA Region 3 meet

MOULTRIE – That 21 of the 23 young athletes Moss Farms Diving took to USA Diving’s Junior Region 3 Championships held last weekend in Orlando qualified to advance to next month’s Zone B competition is plenty impressive.

Perhaps equally noteworthy in Orlando was that Moss Farms produced the overall first-place team, the girl’s first-place team and the boy’s first-place team.

And in the field of 167 divers, Moss Farms turned in 11 individual first-place finishes.

Moss Farms coach Chris Heaton did a little digging in the archives on the DiveMeets website, which only go back to 2007, and found that the most first-place individual finishes by the Diving Tigers in a Region meet before this year had been three, in 2007 and 2014.

“I was pretty excited when I found that out,” Heaton said.

Overall, Moss Farms was first with 305 points. Orlando’s YCF Diving was second with 186 points.

Of the 21 Diving Tigers who will compete in the Zone B Championships, which will be held on June 21-25 on the familiar boards of the Moose Moss Aquatics Center, two – Ruth Anne McCranie and Carson Tyler – won on all three boards at the Region meet.

That gave each Diving Tiger 30 points, both tying for first among girls and boys. The boys as a team had 149 and the girls 156.

Johanna Holloway and Chase Lane each won two events. Maggie Merriman had the other first-place individual finish.

The 1-meter springboard, 3-meter springboard and platform sweeps by McCranie, who dives in the 12-13 girls age group, and Tyler, who dives 12-13 boys, were not surprises, Heaton said.

“We were expecting a clean sweep,” Heaton said. “We’ve got high expectations for them.”

Both McCranie and Tyler improved on the Region Championship performances from a year ago.

McCranie also took first place on the 3-meter board in 2016, when she also was second on platform and third on 1-meter.

The best finish for Tyler last year was second place on 3-meter. He was third on both the 1-meter and platform.

Lane had an outstanding performance in Orlando as well, finishing first on both the 1-meter board and platform and taking the silver medal on 3-meter. Lane dives in 16-18 boys.

Holloway was first in 16-18 girls on 3-meter and platform and was sixth on 1-meter.

Merriman, who also dives in 16-18 girls, was first on 1-meter and second on 3-meter.

Bo Bridges, who competes in 12-13 boys, found Orlando to his liking, finishing second on both 1-meter and platform and fifth on three meter.

Competing in 11-and-under boys, Jet Geovanni earned bronze medals on both springboards.

Parker Hardigree, in 16-18 boys, was third on 3-meter and fourth on 1-meter.

Jordan Avery turned in a third-place finish on the 3-meter board in 14-15 girls.

Also in 12-13 girls, Carolyne Turner was fourth on 3-meter and fifth on 1-meter.

Also competing at the Region Championships for Moss Farms were Anabelle Brooks, Jewelia Chambers, Sky Geovanni, Isabella Grayson, Kelliann Howell, Kate Jimmerson, James Kirbo, Mauri Leroux, Nolan Lewis, Walker Lewis, Ann Taylor, Abigale White and Emily Ann Wolfson.
