Mother, sister charged with cruelty to teenager
DALTON, Ga. — A teenage girl telling middle school counselors she was “planning on killing herself” led to the arrests of her mother and older sister for first degree cruelty to children, according to an incident report.
Daysi Zablah, 40, and Mariam Zablah, 25, both of 435 Underwood Circle, were both also charged with battery (family violence) by the Dalton Police Department.
According to the incident report, the girl said she had been beaten with a belt and an electrical cord after her mother found the girl’s boyfriend naked in her room around midnight on Oct. 19. This was reportedly the second time the boyfriend had been caught sneaking into her room.
On the following Monday, the school resource officer was contacted by one of the school counselors about a student “threatening to harm herself.” The student had “self-inflicted cut marks on her upper legs.” Police found “multiple bruising marks on her body, including her arms, abdomen, back and legs. … Some of the markings appear to be in the outline of a folded electrical cord.”
The report said the girl was taken to the Hamilton Medical Center emergency room and referrals were made to the Division of Family and Children Services and to the DPD’s Criminal Investigations Division. A DFCS case worker began a “care plan” for the girl’s “protection” until the DFCS investigation is complete.
Both Daysi and Mariam Zablah are being held at the Whitfield County jail without bond.
