THOMASVILLE — Fifteen famous people from American history suddenly came to life on a recent afternoon.

Florence Nightingale, Helen Keller, Henry Ford, Martha Washington, Wyatt Earp and Betsy Ross were among them. Well, miniature versions, anyway.

Fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade homeschool students in the Essentials program at the Thomasville community of Classical Conversations were dressed up in all their cardboard and bedsheet splendor as they entertained family and friends with their costumes and a short speech about their historical figure.

Classical Conversations, the world’s largest classical homeschool organization, provides Christian curriculum and supportive educational communities for students K4-12.

“The students had a great time researching and writing about their historical character,” said Meg Herring, Essentials tutor for the Thomasville community of Classical Conversations. “Their use of the research process was clearly seen as they presented their character to the audience. They had fun making history come alive.”

This is a highlight of the year for the Essentials students ages 9-12, Herring explained. Students have been working hard all year learning to write well in their class on Essentials of the English Language. 

Their last assignment was a research paper on the historical character of their choice. They summarized their paper into a short speech and presented a dramatic interpretation.
