Police: Man discharges arrow, charged with aggravated assault

THOMASVILLE — Police responded to a Covington Place residence during pre-dawn hours Sunday after a woman reported her room mate discharging an arrow at her.

The arrow, shot from a crossbow, went through a door, flew past the woman and her juvenile son as they stood in a hallway. The arrow came to rest in a bathroom door, a Thomasville Police Department incident report states.

When the suspect, 29-year-old James Kenley Chastain, pointed the crossbow at the her, the woman went into a room to get away from him, said Sg. Scott Newberry, assistant commander of the TPD Criminal Investigations Division.

Police could not make contact with Chastain or the woman’s son inside the residence.

The suspect’s mother, owner of the residence, arrived at the scene, and told officers she was in phone contact with her son and the juvenile in woods behind the residence.

Chastain and the 16-year-old emerged from woods.

Officers found methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, including a syringe with a needle attached, in a large backpack Chastain was carrying. Also found were five bottles of methadone prescribed for Chastain, the incident report states.

“We did not locate the crossbow,” Newberry said.

Police charged the suspect with aggravated assault.

The Thomas County/Thomasville Narcotics/Vice Division charged Chastain with methamphetamine possession and possession of drug-related objects, said Keith Drawdy, assistant narcotics/Vice commander.

Chastain is being held in the Thomas County Jail, pending a bond hearing.
