TEF’s 80th anniversary season continues with Chanticleer
Chanticleer, the acclaimed male vocal ensemble, performs at the Thomasville Center for the Arts Tuesday evening, the second concert on Thomasville Entertainment Foundation’s 80th anniversary lineup.
The highly-anticipated October 10 concert is a virtual sell-out, with a waiting list, so TEF season subscribers who find they are unable to attend are encouraged to release their seats back to the organization as quickly as possible to allow others to enjoy the performance.
The concert marks Chanticleer’s fifth appearance on a TEF series, but this year’s event has a special dimension as it marks a homecoming for Thomasville native William Fred Scott, who was named the group’s music director in 2014.
Scott hails from a prominent Thomasville family whose roots ran deep into the civic and business interests of the community throughout the 20th century, including long involvement with and support for TEF.
Scott’s grandmother, Elva Holman Scott, and his mother, Mary Andrews Scott, both served several terms as TEF president and many years on the board. His father, Fred Scott Jr., was also a TEF trustee, and his grandfather, W. Fred Scott Sr., was one of the five angels who contributed significantly to TEF’s endowment in 1943.
Scott has himself been a part of several past TEF seasons, most notably as associate conductor of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra under Robert Shaw in its 1982 concert here and as accompanist for opera singers Marianna Christos and Evelyn Petros.
For their upcoming Thomasville performance, Chanticleer offers a new program entitled “Heart of a Soldier,” Scott said, with selections ranging from early music of war and peace by Janequin and Dufay and Russian martial music by Glinka to extracts from Jennifer Higdon’s “Cold Mountain,” new works for Chanticleer by Mason Bates and John Musto and lighthearted popular music from the home front, among others.
Considered an “orchestra of voices,” Chanticleer is a Grammy Award-winning a cappella ensemble that performs in its San Francisco Bay area base and around the world. Now in its 40th year, Chanticleer’s work is featured on more than 40 recordings.
Following the 7:30 p.m. performance, concertgoers are invited to welcome Scott home and greet the artists of Chanticleer at a gala reception at the Center for the Arts.
Thomasville Entertainment Foundation is a volunteer-led, non-profit organization celebrating its 80th anniversary season. In addition to presenting concerts by acclaimed artists and a dedicated family series, TEF provides educational outreach programs for students and performing arts scholarships.
