Lady Devils open golf schedule

TIFTON — Lady Devils golf swings into action Saturday as the Tift County teams head for the coast.

The Lady Devils will compete at the Glynn Ryder Invitational at Jekyll Island. The Blue Devils will be there as will, at the Johnny Paulk Invitational.

Head coach and athletic director Rusty Smith said his team will have four experienced competitors on the roster.

“The whole team is returning,” he said.

The squad will be led by Kaysie Harrelson. A senior, Harrelson signed a golf scholarship with Georgia Southern University in November and has played in three state tournaments. She finished 19th in the state last year. In addition, Harrelson has just finished basketball season, where she was named first team All-Region.

Others on the roster are Gracie Brumfield, Callie West and Caelan Collins. Collins and Brumfield, said Smith, have “improved 100 percent.” West is another multi-sport athlete, competing in competition cheer and golf.

Collins and Harrelson will be paired at Glynn Ryder as will West and Brumfield.

The plan for this team is simple.

“We’ve made it to state every year,” said Smith. “That’s our goal.”

To make state, three players for Tift have to combine to shoot under 300 as a team at the area competition. With so few teams in the region (three), he said area would be the first round of postseason. Area is set for April 23 at nearly the other end of the state: Monroe Area in Walton County.

State is even more desirable for Tift because they are hosting it; the two-day tournament will be held May 21-22 at Spring Hill Country Club.

Other tournaments for the Lady Devils this season will be the Trojan Invitational in Albany (March 12), at Metter (March 17), the Athens Area Classic (March 24), the Dynamite Goodloe tournament in Valdosta (March 26), the Viking Invitational in Valdosta (March 31), the Lady Packer Invitational at Moultrie (April 7), the Bear Invitational in Warner Robins (April 9) and the Blue Devil Invitational at Spring Hill (April 30).
