Bowden to speak at Live Oak Church of God
LIVE OAK, Fla. — College Football Hall of Fame coach Bobby Bowden will be at the Live Oak Church of God on Tuesday. Bowden, the legendary Florida State University coach, is the special guest speaker at the church’s “Iron Sharpens Iron” free men and boy’s event Tuesday at 7 p.m. Doors to the church, which is located at 9828 U.S. Highway 129 South, will open at 6 p.m. The event is presented by the Live Oak Church of God Men’s Ministry. Bowden was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2006 and retired following the 2009 season as the Seminoles’ head coach. In 34 years at FSU, Bowden led the Seminoles to a 304-97-4 record including national championship in 1993 and 1999. Total, Bowden won 346 games to 123 losses in 40 years as a Division I head coach.

Book festival returns to Dalton State College
DALTON, Ga. — Dalton State College’s Derrell C. Roberts Library hosts its ninth annual Book Festival next week featuring three local authors. The book festival is Monday, April 9, to Wednesday, April 11, in the library’s media lab. Authors are scheduled to speak daily. Participating this year are Jodi Lowery, Kenyon Henry and Barbara Tucker. All programs are free and open to the public. • Lowery, a former educator with a love of history, will speak on her latest book “Jan: The Youngest Woman Sentenced to Georgia’s Death Row.” The nonfiction book tells of Janice Buttrum, who was convicted of murder in Dalton in 1981. Lowery spent hours interviewing and exchanging letters with Buttrum for the book. She will speak Monday at 12:15 p.m. • Henry, a DSC alumnus, is the author of “Choice of the Mighty: Chronicles of Stephen” and the entire Chronicles of Stephen series. The series follows a young man with a powerful gift to hear and control the thoughts of others. Henry will speak Tuesday at 12:15 p.m. • Tucker, chair of the Department of Communication and a professor of communication at DSC, will speak on her most recent work “Long Lost Family: A Mystery Novel.” The book involves family secrets, an overblown wedding, unexpected guests, and a murder. This is Tucker’s sixth novel. She will speak Wednesday at 12:15 p.m.

Hospice hosting Clay Shoot Classic

The Hospice of South Georgia is still accepting sponsorships and participants for its Clay Shoot Classic to be held May 5 at Southwind Sporting Clays. This will be the hospice’s first clay shooting tournament. Marketing Manager Lindsey Rogers said the new event will fundraise for patient care in the home setting and also for Langdale Hospice House. “This is a good cause, and it should be interesting,” she said. Competitors will set up at 12 available stations and shoot clay targets that will be launched from machinery, said Marie Benefield, event coordinator and advisory board treasurer. Registration can be completed online at hospiceofsouthgeorgia.org until April 20. Anyone interested can also search for Hospice of South Georgia on Facebook. Participants must compile four-person teams and can be sponsored by a business, Rogers said. It’s not mandatory for teams to be sponsored, though there must be a team name. The pro-sponsor level is $500, and includes an event t-shirt, company logo and marketing products. Teams can also engage in the shoot on the core sponsor level for $400 with less marketing. Sponsors not wishing to have a team participate in the shoot but still wanting to be a part of the event can donate $100. The shoot will begin at 8 a.m. Lunch will be provided for team members and refreshments will be available for purchase for anyone attending. There will also be door prizes.
