Former Blue Devil Bassett named All-American

TIFTON — A former Tift County Blue Devil baseball player is racking up plenty of attention in the college ranks.

Le Bassett, Mercer University’s designated hitter during the 2018 season, has been named to a pair of Freshmen All-American teams, according to a pair of press releases from the school.

Bassett, along with R.J. Yeager, (a Lynn Haven, Fla., native) were named to the 2018 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Freshman All-American Team second team. The honor came days after the duo were named to the 2018 Collegiate Baseball Freshmen All-American team.

According to Mercer, Bassett set a freshman record for the school with 17 home runs, a mark that also led the Southern Conference. In addition, he drove in 60 runs, batted .282 and led the team with a .678 slugging percentage. Three times this season, he had two-homer games: against Alcorn State, The Citadel and Florida A&M. In the Alcorn State game, he drove in six runs.

Bassett started 39 of the 48 games he played.

Besides the All-American honors, Bassett merited a place on the 2018 SoCon All-Freshman squad.

Mercer went 38-22 for the 2018 season and advanced all the way to the Southern Conference finals before falling to second seed Samford.
