Demons dominate Braves at home

The Baldwin Braves (0-4) took another one on the chin against a very good football team Friday night.

Warner Robins High School came to town and handed BHS its fourth consecutive loss to open the 2018 season 48-14.

“We just didn’t have enough fight,” said Baldwin head coach Jesse Hicks after the loss. “We played hard and you want that, but we’re 0-4 — so you’ve got to try to figure it out. We knew when we made this schedule that it was going to be tough. We did that to try to get our kids ready and hopefully it’s going to pay dividends for us down the road. We’ve got to swallow this, look at the mistakes and get ready to do it again against another team.”

The Braves got to see a prolific offense firsthand as the now 3-0 Demons entered the contest having put up an average of 45 points through their first two contests, thanks in large part to the right arm of talented quarterback Dylan Fromm. The senior signal caller tossed a pair of touchdown passes Friday night, and a handful of his other throws, including a couple of well-placed back-shoulder fades, illustrating why he was offered a scholarship to play football at Mercer University. The Demons never had to send their punter out when Fromm was on the field as every drive, except for the one to finish out the second quarter, ended with points for the visitors.

“The Fromm kid’s an excellent thrower,” Coach Hicks said. “I think he showed that tonight.”

Baldwin’s offense has struggled in the early going of this season, but showed signs of life Friday. When Braves’ senior quarterback Torez Hicks wasn’t running for his life from Warner Robins defenders he was able to find receivers downfield. He hit junior running back Zaahir Salahuddin three times for a total of 74 yards and one 36-yard touchdown, and also hooked up with wide receiver Jordan Walker for a second consecutive week.

Both the offensive and defensive lines for BHS were getting handled by their opponents this week, and Coach Hicks has made it a point to say, on a few occasions, that will continue to happen until Baldwin’s weightlifting facilities are up to par.

“We’ve just got to get bigger and stronger up front,” he said. “People are going to push us around until we get ourselves a weight room we can use.”

That point was on display late in the second half when Warner Robins running back Jahlen Rutherford ran for a 9-yard touchdown. A couple of Baldwin defenders found themselves pushed back into their own end zone on the play.

Baldwin’s early season gauntlet continues next week when they take on another team from the International City, Northside of Warner Robins, at home for the third week in a row.
