Golf roundup: Branford girls capture third straight district title; area teams move on to regional tournaments

LAKE CITY, Fla. — The Branford girls golf team kept up its district title run, defeating four teams on Tuesday to win a third straight district championship. 

Branford shot a 444 to win the Class 1A-District 7 Tournament held at Lake City Country Club. Fort White (467) placed second and Newberry (520) was third. Bell finished fourth (527) and was followed by Trenton (548).

Erika Clesi’s 108 was the third best individual score of the tournament and Branford’s best mark. Seventh grader Emily Richards shot a 109. Mary Varga had a 112, Aimee Clesi finished at 115 and Halleigh Ray Harris shot 116.

Erica Lloyd of Union County was low medalist with a 97.     

The BHS girls will play in a regional tournament on Monday at The Legacy Club at Alaqua Lakes in Longwood. 

BHS boys move on, Hornets send three to regional tournament  

At the Boys Class 1A-District 7 Tournament, also held at Lake City CC, Branford placed second out of six teams with a score of 389. Lafayette came in fourth at 440.  

Newberry (374) was district champion, Trenton (425) placed third, Union County (492) came in fifth and Bell (545) was sixth.

By placing in the top three, the Buccaneers earned a trip to a regional tournament on Monday at The Legacy Club at Alaqua Lakes in Longwood.

Rylee McKenzie shot a team-best 95 for Branford. Hunter Hawthorne posted a 97, Seth Reaves finished with a 98, Brady Anderson shot a 99 and Dalton Allen recorded a 106.

Lafayette was led by Truett Maund and Austin Edwards, who both carded a 105. 

Although LHS didn’t qualify as a team for a regional match, three Hornets will move on because of their individual scores.

Maund and Edwards, along with Richy James (114), advanced to play on Monday. They will complete alongside Branford.

Riley Edwards shot a 116 and Preston Edwards finished with a 133. 

Newberry’s Brandon Bulla was the low medalist with a round of 82. 

SHS girls advance 

LIVE OAK — The Suwannee High girls golf team finished second in the Class 2A-District 3 Tournament on Tuesday at Suwannee Country Club.

Gainesville took the district title by shooting 416. Suwannee shot 443 and Wakulla was third with a 465.

Suwannee’s Kinley Steinchen had the third best individual score (103). Gainesville’s Ally Cerlanek (84) shot the low round of the tournament.

Emma Corbin-Pittman — 136

Suwannee will make the trip to Gulf Breeze on Tuesday to play a regional tournament at Tiger Point Golf Club.

The SHS boys are competing in the district tournament today.
