County commissioner receives certification
THOMASVILLE — A Thomas County commissioner completed a round of training that taught him, among other things, not to make promises he cannot keep.
District 8 Commissioner Zippy Vonier completed core requirements in the Lifelong Learning Academy, a learning tool presented by Association County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG) in conjunction with the Carl Vinson Institute of Government at the University of Georgia.
Vonier, who took office in January, said he learned more about how county government operates, the taxation process and how to better handle budget matters.
“I learned how to communicate with people better,” Vonier said. “I learned that in representing people, don’t promise something you can’t deliver.”
Vonier said he wants to respond to constituents “in the right way.” He wants to satisfy constituents, but not mislead them.
“It is a great accomplishment as a county commissioner to receive certification proving the dedication to his service,” said county commission Chairman Ken Hickey.
Hickey said Vonier completed the course in a short period of time.
“Most commissioners take a couple of years to complete this,” the chairman said.
“I felt like if I am representing people, I should know how to do it,” Vonier said.
