Harper Elementary special education students determined to cycle

Harper Elementary school has a group of special needs students determined to participate in group activities — especially athletics.

The self-contained special needs class at Harper is working on becoming Thomasville’s very first Special Olympics cycling team.

The “Myers’ Mighty Tikes” practices cycling daily on Harper’s campus.

The team consists of Harper special education teacher Annie Myers, Harper special education support teacher Janice Gosier, Harper special education paraprofessional Nicole Copeland, and seven athletes.

“Our athletes’ hard work and their determination has already gained attention,” Myers said. “We have had donors who have graciously donated two bikes to our team. Our athletes do not let their disabilities stop them from enjoying the opportunity to jump on a bike and ride.”

Said Harper Principal Melvin Hugans, “Myers is a true visionary. Her passion and energy for creating meaningful opportunities for students with special needs is encouraging. We are humbled and blessed to operate in a community which supports not only education, but students with special needs at such a high level.

“Our students are exposed to opportunities that are life changing,” Hugans said. “Myers and her team are an inspiration to the Harper staff and faculty.”
