Diamondbacks take Cairo’s Hancock in 38th round

Former Cairo High School baseball ace pitcher Emerson Hancock was selected in the 38th round of Major League Baseball’s first-year player draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday.
Hancock, who has signed to play for the University of Georgia, was the 1,132nd overall pick.
During his senior season for the Syrupmakers, Hancock went 11-1 with an earned run average of 0.75. He also struck out 125 batters in 65 innings. As a junior, the 6-foot-4, 190-pound right-hander was 11-1 with an ERA of 1.09 and struck out 98.
On his Twitter page, Hancock posted “Can’t wait to get to Athens and get to work” on Wednesday.
