THOMASVILLE — This week the Brookwood campus has been filled with the sound of young toes kicking soccer balls as the Warriors host yet another summer camp. This time the focus is on soccer for k — eighth grade youth.

With over 20 campers in attendance, the Brookwood soccer coaches are working hard to teach these kids the fundamentals of the beautiful game. That includes having fun and working together. The campers split into two age groups with the older kids working on more advanced skills like passing and filling space, while the younger kids work on basic fundamental skills like dribbling and controlling the ball.

“This is just having the kids have fun and teaching them fundamental soccer skills. Just passing and moving into space and basic touch stuff,” said coach Esterio.

The younger campers learn basic skills through games such as red light green light to keep them engaged. They work the ball around and through cones as they listen for the coach’s call of red light or green light.

“It’s fun,” coach Esterio said. “It’s less pressure, but at the same time they are still learning.”

As for the older kids, their focus is on improving more advanced skills, but also learning to work as a team. The drills they engage in require the campers to learn each other’s names and speak to each other when passing, something that is essential on the pitch.

The campers will continue to learn and improve throughout the week, meeting at Brookwood every morning until Thursday.
