THOMASVILLE — An FBI lab report states a substance mailed to Thomasville High School is harmless, but it is not known what the white powder is.
THS was evacuated the morning of Monday, Jan. 4 — the first day of school after Christmas holidays. The white powder was in envelope mailed to the school.
Letters in the envelopes threatened school staff, but no one in particular. Two letters were in one envelope.
The powder, described as “non-hazardous,” was tested at an Atlanta FBI lab. It will now be sent to an FBI lab at Quantico, Virginia, for further testing.
“All the testing they did shows it was harmless,” said Sgt. Scott Newberry, Thomasville Police Department Criminal Investigations Division assistant commander.
He said some U.S. mail is sorted by scanner and other by hand. The source of the THS mail is being tracked to determine its origin.
“The postal service is seeing how far they can track it,” Newberry said.
Criminal charges await the sender. Newberry said charges of terroristic threats and acts and school-related offenses will be made if an offender is determined.
