THOMASVILLE — Police are accustomed to talkative people trying to district officers from further investigation.

Such was the case when a Thomasville Police Department officer monitoring traffic late Saturday night at West Clay and Short streets. The officer’s automatic license plate reader alerted to an expired registration.

After the truck was pulled over and the officer was talking to Nathaniel Davis, the driver, he detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from the vehicle.

According to a TPD incident report, the female front passenger, Laquon Johnson, constantly interrupted to provide reasons why they were traveling in the vehicle.

Johnson said she had been drinking and had “a small shot of liquor,” the report states. Davis said he had not been drinking, although the odor of an alcoholic beverage was coming from his person, and he swayed slightly while standing.

The driver was tested at the scene and charged with driving under the influence.

Davis told the officer a “dime bag” of marijuana was in the truck’s center console and that he smokes the contraband.

Under the radio, officers found a loaded .380 Highpoint handgun.

The report states Johnson had multiple items consistent with narcotics use in her possession. She told officers she smoked narcotics the previous day.

Cold beer was found in the passenger door pocket, along with beer and brandy under the seat. An open bottle of whiskey was in the console.

Officer found more cocaine smoking devices in the glove compartment in a cigarette package, said Louis Schofill, Thomas County/Thomasville Narcotics/Vice Division commander.

“We are currently working the case,” Schofill said.

Johnson, 46, 541 Chestnut Avenue, Boston, is charged with cocaine possession, drug-related object and open container violation.

In addition to DUI, Davis, 59, 1501 Bluebird Ave., is charged with marijuana possession, open container violation, drug-related object and operating a vehicle without a valid tag.
