THOMASVILLE — In announcing his candidacy for the Thomasville City Council District 1, Post 2 seat, Terry Scott focused on several areas of city life.

He wants to work closely with the city manager to continue projects for constructing sidewalks, paving streets and continuing city park and recreation improvement projects.

Scott, a former city council member, wants to continue efforts he championed while in office.

Pointing out a grant for Dewey City sewer work, Scott said Dewey City has been neglected for years.

“The Dewey City sewer system is old and dilapidated,’ he said. “It is time for a new system.”

Scott wants to ensure grant funding is used for sewer system improvements. Some Dewey City streets, Scott said, are in need of resurfacing.

Some dilapidated houses in the city have been renovated, but others should come down, Scott said.

“If it cost more to repair a house than it’s worth, it needs to be torn down,” the Thomasville native said.

Scott, 64, is a Thomasville minister. He retired from the U.S. Army after a 27-year career. He and his wife, Veronica, have four children and three grandchildren.

Noting Thomasville’s growth, Scott said more job openings will be available.

As a council member, he wants to join forces with Southern Regional Technical College and the Thomasville City Board of Education to establish a way for high school students to gain technical training while still in high school.

“Upon graduation from high school, the students will be on the path to learning a trade and finding good jobs,” Scott said.

As a council member, he would work with the Thomasville Payroll Development Authority (PDA) to continue the PDA’s already-successful efforts to bring more jobs to the community.

City council candidates will qualify in August to seek office. The general election is in November.
