THOMASVILLE — Tuesday’s U.S. Senate and state Public Service Commission runoff cost Thomas County government $25,000 or more, said elections supervisor Frank Scoggins.
Scoggins said 98 poll workers were at Thomas County’s 17 polling places Tuesday.
Linda Solana, Thomas County Board of Elections chairman and manager at the Central polling place said the election went smoothly at that precinct.
“We had 200 more (votes) than on November 3,” she said. “To my knowledge, there were no problems at any of the precincts.”
Solana said Scoggins and the elections office staff prepared poll workers well and were available to assist precincts throughout election day.
Poll watchers from local Republican and Democratic parties were at some polling places.
Scoggins said all the equipment worked well and there were no significant problems with any of the equipment.
The two incumbent Republican Georgia U.S. senators vying to return to their respective seats received the greatest number of Thomas County votes in the Tuesday runoff.
In a 63% voter turnout, 19,276 votes were cast in the runoff on election day, in absentee ballots and in early voting.
Incumbent Georgia U.S. Sen. Kelly Loeffler received 11,596 Thomas County votes, to 7,628 votes for challenger Raphael Warnock.
Warnock, pastor of Atlanta’s storied Atlanta Ebenezer Baptist Church, has been declared the winner.
Incumbent Georgia U.S. Sen. David Perdue received 11,574 votes to opponent John Ossoff’s 7,641 votes in Thomas County.
The counting of votes in the Perdue/Ossoff contest continued midday Wednesday in metropolitan Atlanta.
