THOMASVILLE — Joe Lane, a retired City of Thomasville electric lineman, received needed support from former colleagues and two local businesses.
When Lane had to retire in January because of critical medical issues, a raffle was organized. Three grand prizes, with a total value of $1,000, were donated by American Pawn and Plantation Propane.
Raffle organizers, who said Lane lived his life “on the line” for 30 years, were eager to help.
With several of his supporters watching, Lane drew winners’ names.
Donald Such won the grand prize, a fish cooker provided by Plantation Propane. Teresa Weeks won a Ruger 10-22, the second prize, donated by American Pawn. Richard Dees, won the third prize, a 50-quart K2 chest, donated by American Pawn.
The raffle and monetary donations raised more than $5,000.
“Seeing Joe out of the wheelchair and standing with a cane absolutely made our day,” said Chris White, city executive director of public utilities. “We were all excited to see Joe announce the winners. Our excitement was like watching kids opening presents on Christmas Day.
“When asked to say a few words after the raffle, Lane laughed and said, ‘Hi, Mom. Hi, Dad. I’m working on getting better, one leg at a time.’ ”
Kha McDonald, city executive director human resources and community relations, expressed gratitude to business owners David Hufstetler and Monty Lewis for making contributions to the raffle.
“One text to David asking for help got the ball rolling,” McDonald said. “David contributed prizes, covered other costs associated with the raffle and reached out to Monty for support as well.”
Lane’s colleagues, known as “Team Joe,” are grateful to the community for purchasing raffle donations and for making monetary donations to assist Lane, McDonald said.
