CAIRO — A recount of two Republican primaries completed Thursday morning at the Grady County courthouse did not change any election results.
Richard Jordan, candidate for the District 1 seat on the Grady County Board of Commissioners, and Bobby Newmons, candidate for Grady County tax commissioner, requested recounts of their close defeats in Tuesday night’s general primary election. At the completion of the recount process, the vote margins of both contests were the same as before.
Election night results showed Jordan falling by just 50 votes to incumbent June Knight, 557-507, while Newmons was defeated by a margin of 103 votes to incumbent Barbara Darus, 2,032-1,929. Both candidates held small leads in ballots that were cast in-person, but then fell behind after absentee ballots were counted.
Those results were unchanged at the completion of the recount process. Knight will go on to face Democrat Ralph Harris in the general election in November, while Darus will be assured of her second consecutive term in office as she does not face a Democratic candidate this fall
County elections supervisor Denise Maddox said she was not obligated by law to conduct the recounts as neither candidate finished within 1 percent of their opponent, she said.
Maddox said the recounts did not cost the county money.
