THOMASVILLE- Halcyon Home for Battered Women held their inaugural Hope Music Fest on Saturday night, welcoming in The Undecided and the Billy Rigsby Band to raise proceeds for the non-profit organization, which aims to provide a safe shelter and support services for women and children exposed to domestic violence.

According to Halcyon Home Executive Director Deborah Murray, the event was a success.

“Both bands were great,” she said. “Everyone who came out really seemed to enjoy themselves.”

While the night was a fun occasion, it also served as a reminder that October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

During the Billy Rigsby Band’s setlist, a moment of silence was held for the 194 lives lost in 2022 due to domestic violence, including those of perpetrators and innocent bystanders.

Halcyon Home sees the lasting impact of domestic violence every day with their 15-bed shelter currently at capacity. However, being at capacity does not stop them from still helping those in need.

Murray explained that this weekend alone they welcomed in three new women, who will benefit from the proceeds raised at Hope Music Fest.

“All of that money is earmarked to directly help these women and children with financial services, rent deposits, clothing and all the necessities they will need to move forward in their life after facing domestic violence,” she said.

While the shelter is only open to women and children, Murray understands men are equally as susceptible to domestic violence.

Halcyon Home does provide outreach for men who have suffered at the hands of domestic violence and can provide them with a stay in a hotel and counseling. In addition to this, they work with veterinarians, as Murray realizes many individuals are scared to leave their furry friends behind for fear the animal will be targeted next.

Murray said she knows they would not be able to continue to provide these services without supporters of the Halcyon Home and donors like those who attended Hope Music Fest.

“Hope Music Fest was a great time and a success for us. We look forward to next year,” she said.

While no date is set for 2024, she encourages individuals to check their Facebook and keep an eye open for a later announcement on the date to add to their calendar.
