CAIRO — Grady County has doubled its number of positively identified cases of the coronavirus.

Officials with the Grady County Health Department were notified of several new confirmed cases of the virus that causes COVID-19 Monday morning, bringing the county’s total up to six. Health Department director Michelle Thornton said each of the virus patients lives within Grady County.

The state Department of Public Health was reporting three confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Grady County as recently as 6:30 p.m. Sunday. The county’s first confirmed cases of the virus appeared last week.

Thornton was unsure if any of the county’s patients are on ventilators.

No deaths related to the virus have been reported in the county.

With data indicating that the virus is continuing to spread in the community, the Grady County Board of Commissioners could vote to extend a local emergency order to shelter in place which is set to expire Monday.

“I don’t see anything changing between now and Monday that’s going to drastically change how we do business,” said County Administrator Buddy Johnson.

Commission Chair Keith Moye said Governor Brian Kemp’s shelter in place order, put into effect Friday and also set to expire April 13, supersedes the directive commissioners voted to enact late last month.

If Kemp does not extend the statewide order by Thursday, Moye said an emergency special called meeting of the commissioners would have to take place to discuss lengthening their own directive. Any such meeting would have to take place before the county’s order expires Monday at 8 a.m.

No other amendments to the order are likely to be implemented.

“I think we’re happy with what we have,” Johnson said.

Cairo interim police chief Giovannie Santos said residents have been voluntarily cooperating with the order thus far.
