CAIRO — A Grady County child was killed in a vehicular crash Sunday when he was crushed by a four-wheeler, according to authorities.
Harrison Hooks, 8, was driving an all-terrain vehicle by himself on his family’s lawn when he made a sharp left turn to avoid hitting a small tree.
The boy then lost control of the vehicle, a Kubota RTV 900, and struck the tree and overturned.
The incident occurred at approximately 12:50 p.m. on Mimosa Lane north of Cairo.
Hooks, who was apparently not wearing a seatbelt, was partially ejected from the ATV.
The boy was then crushed when the 1,200-pound vehicle rolled on top of him.
Hooks’ grandmother called 911 when she was unable to lift the vehicle off him due to its weight.
An ambulance arrived at 1:12 p.m. and transported the boy to Grady General Hospital where he was pronounced deceased at 2:22 p.m.
Deputy coroner Ronnie Corker stated the cause of death was blunt force trauma.
Both Hooks’ parents were working in Thomasville when the incident occurred.
The boy’s grandmother was supervising him and had warned him not to drive fast.
Hooks’ grandmother was cooking inside the house when she said he went outside of her line of vision. She then heard the vehicle’s engine revving and a loud collision.
Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene and notified Georgia State Patrol of the incident at 1:13 p.m and dispatched a trooper.
GSP trooper Jamill Curry arrived at the site of the crash at 1:49 p.m. to begin investigating and was later joined by Sgt. 1st Class John VanLandingham.
Corker said there were no plans to conduct an autopsy on the minor as there are no pending charges in the case.
