Early voters line up before elections office opens

THOMASVILLE — Some early voters lined up outside the Thomas County elections office more than an hour before early voting began at 8 a.m. Monday.
“We had quite a crowd,” said Frank Scoggins, elections supervisor.
Scoggins opined that those who voted early on the first day might have done so to avoid long lines as early voting continues.
By 11:15 a.m. Monday, 400 voters had cast ballots in the Jan. 5 runoff for two Georgia U.S. Senate seats and a Georgia Public Service Commission seat.
Dec. 7 was the last day to register to vote in the runoffs.
Thomas County now has 32,802 registered voters.
Early voting continues until Thursday, Dec. 31, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the elections office, 1402 E. Jackson St., and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19.
The elections office will be closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
“We will be open on New Year’s Eve,” the elections supervisor said.
Those who have received absentee ballots but decide to vote in person are encouraged to bring and surrender their absentee ballots when voting in person.
“If early voting is anything like it was today, it will be pretty robust,” Scoggins said Monday.
