THOMASVILLE — The City of Thomasville set its millage rate at 0 again, and also set the city schools millage rate at 17.99 for the coming year.
The city schools’ millage rate is a decrease of .432 from the previous year and is lower than the rollback rate, the millage rate calculated as to not create a property tax increase.
With a net digest of more than $704.7 million, each mill is projected to bring in about $705,000 in property tax revenue.
“Values may go up on properties but when we roll that back, the rollback rate means taxes on those properties won’t increase,” city schools chief financial officer Bo Rosser told council members at last week’s workshop. “The tax digest grew, so we’re collecting more, even though we are rolling back the rate. We’re actually going to collect more funds.”
Rosser credited the city’s staff, especially Melissa Creel and her department, for their help in the rollback rate.
“We feel like the city is going to do a good job of growing,” he said. “We felt it was a small decrease but we feel like in this time, any kind of decrease we can have, that’s what we want to do. We want everyone to know we’re being mindful in what we’re doing with the school system.”
The city school system’s general fund budget for fiscal year 2022 is approximately $28 million. Rosser said the system has had a lot of new grants and CARES Act funding come in.
