THOMASVILLE — Thomasville City Schools is projecting having a slightly lesser bite out of property taxes for the coming year.

Schools finance director Bo Rosser said the projected rollback rate — the rate at which there won’t be an increase in property taxes levied — is 18.008, and he’s recommending shaving it even more to 17.99.

That millage rate is the lowest the city schools levied since 2017.

Rosser told board members that were additions to the tax digest, which represent new income of about $88,000. Under the recommended rollback rate, those new additions would bring in about $75,000.

“Our real and personal property values have had a pretty steady increase over the last five years,” Rosser said. “It averages about 2-3%, which is a pretty strong base.”

The school met board Wednesday, August 3, for tentative approval of the rollback rate. The system has to advertise its five-year tax digest and levy history for 14 days before final approval.

For its $27.76 million budget, the school system is projecting to take in $12.6 million in property taxes.

Once school board members give final approval to the millage rate, it will be sent to the Thomasville City Council for its approval to be levied.

Rosser projected having property tax bills sent out in October should city council members give the go-ahead.
