UDC makes poppy pins for Memorial Day

- PATRIOTIC PINS: President Mary Margaret Quiggle giving out poppies to make pins to wear on Memorial Day. Jinanne Parrish and Dot Maxwell are making their Poppy Pin.
THOMASVILLE- President Mary Margaret Quiggle brought supplies to the John B. Gordon chapter 383 UDC meeting for members to make special Poppy Pins for people to wear in honor of those men and women who lost their lives while serving in the military. Its origin dates back to 1915 when John McCrae, a Canadian, wrote the poem, “In Flanders Fields.” In 1918, Moina Michael made herself a silk poppy to wear on her coat after being inspired by the poem. She wore it to a YWCA Overseas War Secretaries forum. She gave two dozen poppies to other people who attended. The people wanted to wear the poppies in honor of the brave military men and women.
In 1920, the National American Legion adopted the poppies as their official sign of Remembrance , and lobbied Congress to set aside the Friday before Memorial Day as National Poppy Day.
President Quiggle will take the poppy pins to the Rodenberry Library in Cairo to be given out to visitors. The chapter also has a beautiful Patriotic Memorial Day display that President Quiggle set up for all to see when entering the library.
