MOULTRIE, Ga. — Moultrie police are investigating a Saturday afternoon shooting that sent one man to the hospital.

David Barge Jr., 34, of 825 E. Central Ave., was wounded in the leg by a gunshot at his residence, MPD Maj. Tonero Bender said on Monday. He said Barge underwent surgery at Colquitt Regional Medical Center.

“I obviously can’t give you a medical determination,” Bender said, “but it was apparently a pretty bad wound.”

The weapon appears to have been a rifle, he said, but he declined to provide any further information about it.

Bender said investigators are still working to determine what happened. On Monday he did not rule out an accidental shooting.

According to The Moultrie Observer’s previous reporting, Barge was indicted in April on charges of battery and aggravated battery. The newspaper has no details of the incident for which he was indicted or whether there’s been a disposition of that case.
