THOMASVILLE — Brookwood’s first-ever Holiday Hoops Classic came to a close Friday afternoon, and a split on the hosts’ games ended the Warriors’ week.
Taking on Flint River in a morning matchup, the boys fell victim to turnovers as they fell 49-47 at Joe and Mary Beverly Athletic Center. In the classic’s finale later in the day, the girls secured an easy win over Blountstown in a 50-13 rout.
The boys were went into their game a little shorthanded, as the younger players were flexed into another matchup due to a last-minute scheduling change. That left the Warriors’ six upperclassmen by themselves against the visiting Wildcats.
Not having the underclassmen on the bench didn’t seem to have too much of an effect, especially in the first quarter when Kyle Ostrom scored 10 points, with six off of two 3s. Flint River tied with game with a 3 early in the second quarter, but the Warriors pulled back ahead, leading 24-15 going into the locker room.
The Wildcats came out of halftime strong, scoring five in a row to close the gap to 24-20. Brookwood began to struggle with turnovers and were getting out-rebounded, as Flint River finally tied the game up at 31 with 2:16 left in the third. A buzzer-beating 3 left the Warriors in a 39-35 hole headed into the fourth.
Ostrom, Christopher Watt and Eli Miller combined for 12 points in the last frame, with Watt hitting a 3 to get his team to within two with two seconds left in regulation. However, the turnovers in the second half had done their damage, and Brookwood did not have enough time to get the ball back.
Ostrom and Christian Bell led the team with 15 and 12 points, respectively. Despite the loss, the Warriors see a bright side to a close game against a tough opponent.
“They’ve been beating everybody by 20 or 30 points and we held them to 49,” Brookwood boys coach Brad Piazza said. “If we cut our turnovers down, we win that game. We just made too many unforced errors and turned it over at critical points.”
The girls’ road to a victory came without a second half swing from their opposition. After jumping to a 9-2 lead at the end of one, Holland Walker, Mollie Vick and Erin Lewis led a 13-2 run for the Warriors to start the second quarter, with Lewis adding a 3 with less that three minutes to the half.
Brookwood led Blountstown 26-7 at the midway point, and a Walker layup in the fourth gave her team a 30-point lead, as the girls wrapped up their fourth win of the classic.
The boys went 3-1 while the girls completed a 4-0 record in the three-day event. Walker and Watt were selected as all-classic players for their respective teams.
