Thomasville Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution officials welcomed members and guests, including six veterans, to their November meeting held at The Plaza Restaurant.
Veterans were recognized for service, identifying their name, rank and branch. Vice Regent and Chair of Veteran Affairs Deb Phillips gave each veteran a lapel pin displaying an eagle and the American flag with the word veteran.
In addition, Mac Kemp spoke to the group about Honor Flight Tallahassee and its mission of transporting north Florida and south Georgia veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit the memorials dedicated to honor their service and sacrifices.
Support for these trips is provided by volunteers and is no cost to the veterans. Top priority is given to the most senior heroes — survivors of World War II and any veteran with a terminal illness who wishes to visit their memorial. The program transitions to the Korean War, Vietnam War and all other veterans who served, on a chronological basis.
Trips are simply not possible without public support. Prior to the Honor Flight Network, many veterans had given up all hope of ever seeing the World War II Memorial. Now they have hope, but time is not on their side, Kemp said. Honor Flight truly believes that the service of WWII vets and their sacrifices saved the world from oppression and this is a very small way of saying thank you, according to Kemp.
The DAR supports this cause and encourages families with WWII veterans to apply for the next Honor Flight leaving Tallahassee on May 20.
