Thomasville Fire Rescue is conducting the agency’s annual fire hydrant testing within the Thomasville city limits.

Testing will last through the end of April.

“Testing and inspection of the fire hydrants is of utmost importance to ensure adequate flow and water supply pressure is available to suppress any fires within our community,” said Fire Chief Chris Bowman.

All City of Thomasville fire hydrants will be cleaned and/or repainted to improve visibility. Each hydrant also will be opened to check for proper water flow rates and proper operation of all valves and mechanical components.

As fire hydrants are opened to check their flow rates, citizens may notice that their water may appear slightly cloudy.

According to Bill Gerber, City of Thomasville utility operations director, “There’s no cause for alarm as cloudy water is simply caused by air being introduced into the water during the flushing process. Additionally, small amounts of harmless calcium sediment may also be loosened during the tests.”

“If you notice that your water appears slightly cloudy, simply allow the water to run for a few minutes until it flows clearly again,” he added.

The fire chief said cooperation and understanding of residents during the hydrant-testing program is appreciated.
