Funeral services for Robert Leland Harrison, 89, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, 2007, at Cairo First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. James Spencer and Rev. Dr. James Huffaker officiating. Burial will be in Harrison Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Matt Harrison, Jarrett Harrison, Brian Shedd, Richard Waggoner, Jimmy Waggoner and David Wadsworth. Mr. Harrison died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2007, at his residence. Born Oct. 4, 1918, in Cairo, Harrison was the son of the late William Robert and Annie Brownie Wright Harrison. One of the most memorable events he remembered from his childhood was seeing farmers from all around driving their cows to the area dip vat to eradicate ticks. The vat is still at the home place. More recent memories include a sentimental return trip to the European Theater with his wife and fellow members of the 7th Armored Division and their wives in spring 1974. He worked for Roddenberry Hardware before and after attending college. He attended Pine Summit, Cairo Public School and North Georgia College. He served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army’s 7th Armored Division, 38th Infantry Battalion in Europe during World War II, where he lost his arm to a sniper’s bullet while directing medics to a fallen comrade. He was awarded the Bronze Star with two oak-leaf clusters and the Purple Heart with one oak-leaf cluster. Harrison married his wife, Jeanette Lee Harrison in 1946. He was elected clerk of Superior Court, where he served for 36 years, in 1949, and also served in the dual capacity of Probate Judge during a vacancy in office. He was a member of Cairo First Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon and an elder. He served as president of the Cairo Kiwanis Club in 1960, and received the Liberty Bell Award from the Grady County Bar Association in 1975. Survivors include his wife; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Demetrius Harrison and Carl and Cheryl Harrison, all of Cairo; a sister, Betty Waggoner of Thomaston; and grandchildren Stephanie Harrison and Brian Shedd of Tifton, Matt Harrison of Cairo, Julie Harrison of Atlanta and Jarrett Harrison of Cairo. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mabel Wadsworth. Visitation will be held from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. tonight at Clark Funeral Home.
