LETTER TO THE EDITOR: You’re probably operational liberal

I’ve seen three days of Rant and Rave response to my letter of Dec. 12.
From the nature of some of the response, it’s obvious some people may not agree with my political views, but they aren’t capable of refuting what I wrote.
I suggest if you have something literate to say about what I write, send a letter to the editor. He’ll probably publish it. And have something to say other than a shout in a dark theater.
Regarding “ideological conservatives” and “operational liberals,” that’s true in Thomasville as anywherein America. Small government is a great idea, but how do you actually accomplish that and keep the “majority” happy (however you define majority).
For instance, David Koch of “Koch Brothers” infamy, during a recent interview with Barbara Walters for an ABC special, was told he wasn’t “well liked” because of his conservative politics.
“I’m basically a libertarian and I’m a conservative on economicmatters, and I’m a social liberal,” Koch responded. Walters then asked Koch why he uses his wealth to elect sociallyconservative candidates if he supports gay rights and a woman’s right to choose. Discussion followed.
The point being, you don’t really know a person’s politics until you ask the right questions and actually listen to the answers.
I know a hard core,Bush/McCain/Romney Republican right here in Thomasville who was laid off in 2008, drew two years of unemployment (welfare to conservatives),; went to a government-funded training program for more than a year, then took a government-funded job; all provided by a president he wouldn’t vote for. Instead, he voted for a candidate in 2012 who would have denied him most of those benefits intended to restore his ability to earn a living.
Retired conservative? Then cancel your Social Security and Medicare. Those are both “welfare” programs to most conservatives. Give a Republican president a chance and he’ll “fix” that Social Security thing for you by turning it over to Wall Street and letting you pick your own investments (privatizing). Also, Medicare Part D is a “socialist” program paid almost fully by taxpayers and started during the “socialist” administration of George W. Bush in 2006. The only problem being Bush was a Republican … but that didn’t change Part D from being a taxpayer-funded program that added to the deficit.
I suppose a “conservative” farmer should cancel all his crop subsidies and price supports. Those are welfare funded with taxpayer money.
Special tax rates like CUV are simple “redistribution o of wealth” from people who pay taxes to pay for infrastructure and services for the benefit of those who don’t pay at a comparable rate.
A person may be an ideological conservative, but if you’re on the liberal side of even one thing then you’re an operational liberal. You can’t be a little bit dead, pregnant or liberal.
It reminds me of a saying, “If you like what’s happened before, you’re going to love what happens next.”
