Dorothy Ann Newell

Graveside services for Dorothy Ann Newell, 66, of Las Vegas, Nev., are at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at the Barwick Seventh Day Adventist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday evening at the home of her sister on the Barwick-Dixie Highway. Mrs. Newell died Monday, Dec. 29, 2003, at Valley Hospital in Las Vegas after a lengthy illness. Born Jan. 12, 1937, in Brooks County, she was the daughter of the late Jack Carroll and the late Helen Berner Carroll of the Ozell community. She was married to the late Bill Newell. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Harriet and Steven Clements, Pam and Kevin Greenfield, all of Las Vegas. Other survivors include a brother, Jackie Carroll and a sister, Janice Carroll, both of Boston; a grandson, Kody Greefield of Las Vegas; aunts Vera Garbett, Mildred Barner and Agnes Willis; an uncle, R.G. Nellie Ruth Elkins Ward

Graveside services for Nellie Ruth Elkins Ward, 93, are at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at Greeenwood Cemetery, Cairo. She died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at the Presbyterian Home in Quitman. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Born Feb. 18, 1910, in Grady County, she was the daughter of G. Berry Elkins and Emily Sasser Elkins. Mrs. Ward, after attending Grady County grammar schools, graduated from the Georgia Vocational and Trades School at Monroe, Ga., May 1931. She attended the University of Georgia from Sept. 1931 to June 1934, majoring in home economics. She taught in the Walker School in Pine Park until the school was consolidated with a larger school. She, along with the circle of widows in Pine Park, thought the peacefulness of the rural community would be hard to duplicate. She was known for the blooms in her large yard and the devotion and care for her family. On Nov. 22, 1938, she married Preston Rogers Ward, a farmer and Grady County Commissioner 1959-1960, 1973-1976. She was preceded in death by her husband; brothers Ivy Elkins, Pearce Elkins, and Slater Elkins; and sisters Goldie E. Hunt, Alma E. England and Estelle E. Thomas. She is survived by her sister, Carole E. Farmer of Cairo; sons George Robert “Bob” Ward, and former Judge J. Patrick “Pat” Ward, both of Cairo; grandchildren Jennifer M. Ward, Preston Sherman Ward, Renee W. Borgel, Patrick Stephen Ward and James Christopher Ward; many beloved nephews, nieces, great-nephews, great-nieces, and great-great-nieces and nephews.
