THOMASVILLE- Educators from across Georgia, including classroom teachers, digital learning specialists, media specialists, and technology directors, recently gathered at the 2024 Georgia Educational Technology Conference (GaETC) to explore the latest advancements in digital learning. Among the highlights of the event was a dynamic presentation by Josh Mimbs, Cross Creek Elementary’s Digital Learning Specialist, who shared innovative ways to incorporate technology into fine arts education.

A former theatre arts teacher with years of experience, Mimbs identified a need for more digital learning resources tailored specifically to the fine arts. His session, Fine Arts Technology Integration, offered practical strategies for enhancing instruction, assessment, and student engagement in art, music, and theatre programs.

“Incorporating technology into the arts allows educators to amplify students’ creative voices and reach students in ways we couldn’t before,” Mimbs said.

He discussed how technology is not just an add-on but a way to deepen students’ experiences and engagement with the arts.

Drawing from his background in theatre, Mimbs demonstrated how digital tools make fine arts more interactive and accessible for students. He showcased applications like online rubrics, which enable students to give and receive peer feedback on performances, fostering a collaborative learning environment and preparing students for real-world experiences.

One of the session’s highlights was Mimbs’ introduction of online portfolios, which allow students to compile their work and experiences in one accessible place. These portfolios serve as valuable tools for students seeking admittance to college programs and professional auditions, providing a lasting showcase of their skills and growth over time. Mimbs underscored the importance of digital portfolios in helping students present a well-rounded and impressive body of work.

Mimbs challenged attendees to think beyond traditional methods and use technology as a bridge to deeper engagement in the arts. His goal was to inspire a lifetime of learning and exploration in fine arts, enhanced by the latest digital tools.

Educators left the session with fresh enthusiasm and practical ideas to apply in their own classrooms.

“Josh Mimbs showed us how technology can elevate arts education, making it more relevant and engaging for today’s students,” one attendee shared.

Mimbs’ presentation was a powerful reminder of how technology, when thoughtfully integrated, can transform fine arts education and inspire a new generation of creative learners.
