A Greyhoud bus plowed into the rear of a tractor-trailer early Wednesday on Interstate 80 in central Pennsylvania, killing a woman passenger and injuring 44 others, state police reported.

A score of ambulances responded to the crash on the westbound side of the highway near the exit to Williamsport, Pa., home of the Little League World Series.

State police said the accident occurred at 1:41 a.m. The bus carrying 49 passengers was bound for Cleveland, Ohio, from New York City.

The driver of the tractor trailer, Akos Gubica, 36, of New Jersey, told authorities at the scene that he was driving to Ohio when his truck was struck in the rear by the bus. Gubica said he was traveling at about the speed limit and did now know why the bus slammed into his rig.

Ambulances transported the injured passengers to area hospitals in Williamsport, Danville, Lewisburg, Lock Haven and Muncy.

The crash closed Interstate 80 in the area. Relief buses were sent from Philadelphia to pick up uninjured passengers and those who had been treated and released from hospitals.

State police said the driver of the Greyhound bus had been with the company for more than 12 years.
