THOMASVILLE – Thomas University’s men’s and women’s basketball teams hit the hardwood for the first home game of the 2024 season on Tuesday night against Morris College.
The women got things started with their first win of the season, improving to 1-1 with a 65-40 win over the Lady Hornets. The TU women looked very good, scoring well in transition with 21 points off turnovers. This game was settled in the paint as it turned into a fairly physical contest. Morris and Thomas had 22 and 24 points in the paint respectively.
However, it was the Lady Hawk’s remarkable first-half defense that won them the game. They allowed just 11 points in the first half to Morris, including allowing just three points in the second quarter. Destiny Hill had an impressive night, playing a team-high 36 minutes as she led the Lady Hawks with 17 points. Hill also led TU with 17 rebounds in the game. Aaliyah Ringold had 14 points in the game on 4-5 shooting from three-point distance and Thomasville High School’s own Kennedy Hayes contributed big to TU’s first win of the season. Hayes had four points, including an impressive corner three, and led the Lady Hawks with six assists with her dynamic passing. She also led TU with six steals in the game.
The TU men were nothing short of dominant over the Hornets, opening with back-to-back threes by Andre Lightbourne on their way to a 105-56 win in their season opener. The Night Hawks had six different players with nine points or more and four in double digits. The turnovers came in buckets as TU totaled 15 steals against Morris and out-rebounded the Hornets by 11.
The Night Hawks offense was impressive as they hit 13 threes in the game with Lightbourne and Armani Thomas hitting four a piece. Former Thomasville Bulldog Tyson Anderson got the start for the Night Hawks and had seven points in the game with a steal, two assists, and three rebounds in 12 minutes played.
The Lady Hawk’s next home game will be on November 5 against Loyola University out of Louisiana, while the men will host Stillman College on November 7.
