THOMASVILLE — The Thomas Night Hawks were nothing short but dominant in a sweep against the Point Skyhawks on Wednesday afternoon at Armory Field.
Behind a dominant two-way performance from Darian Pippin, the Night Hawks rolled to a 12-0 run-rule victory over the Skyhawks in five innings in game one
Pippin dazzled in the circle, throwing a complete-game one-hitter while striking out six with no walks. The junior right-hander also went 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs to help the Night Hawks continue their hold on second place in the conference standings.
Thomas set the tone early with a three-run first, then exploded for eight runs in the second. The Night Hawks took advantage of seven Point errors and used timely extra-base hits to build an insurmountable lead. Kristin Steller delivered a two-run double, while Grace Hodges, Annalise Buncy, and Ansley Eason all contributed doubles in the offensive outburst.
The Night Hawks added one more in the third and held Point hitless over the final two innings to secure the shutout.
Eason and Hodges each scored twice and stole a base, while freshman and Cairo native Megan Meadows added an RBI in a balanced team effort. Thomas tallied 12 hits in the five-inning win and allowed just one baserunner.
The Thomas University softball team capped off a dominant doubleheader sweep over Point University with a 5-3 win in Game Two.
Thomas used timely hitting and a steady performance in the circle from Baileigh Herrera, Emylee Mountin and Sierra Ussery to hold off a late push from Point. Herrera started and went a couple of strong innings, allowing just one hit before giving way to Ussery, who earned the win in relief with two shutout innings to improve to 11-5 on the season.
Buncy, Hodges, and Ussery fueled the Night Hawks’ offense. Buncy drove in a run and stole a base, while Ussery came off the bench with a clutch 2-for-2 effort, including two RBIs. Hodges added a walk and a run scored as part of Thomas’ balanced attack.
The Night Hawks scored in four different innings and capitalized on four stolen bases, while also taking advantage of seven hits and two Point errors. Pippin added a sacrifice fly to extend the lead in the sixth, and Eason contributed a hit, a run, and a stolen base from the leadoff spot.
Point rallied with three runs in the seventh, but Herrera came back in to shut the door with a game-ending groundout.
