THOMASVILLE – The passing game fired on all cylinders for the Thomas Night Hawks as they handled the Webber International Warriors 44-6 on Friday afternoon at the TU Soccer Complex.
The game saw the freshman upstart Keelin Coleman bounce back after a couple of tough outings the week prior, as she started out the game completing her first five passes, leading the Night Hawks to a quick score on the first drive of the game. The Warriors tried to respond but The Thomas defense, which has been a force to be reckoned with this season forced a three and out to put the ball back in the hands of the offense.
It only took a couple of plays for the Night Hawks to reach the end zone again as Coleman found Kiera Knight for the touchdown. Following a Webber punt, Thomas began driving again but faced a fourth and one situation, Coleman stepped back and found Janae Scott who evaded defenders to get the Warrior 24-yard line for the first down. On the next play, Coleman found Scott again in the back corner of the end zone for the third touchdown of the game.
With three minutes gone by in the second quarter, Webber began to string together a drive of their own as quarterback Samantha Wilson found Zionah Shingles for a nine-yard gain. After a holding penalty on Dyva Jones added to the end of the catch, the Warriors quickly found themselves knocking on the door to the red zone as back-to-back catches from Emma Balacco and one from Brea Kamm brought them to the Night Hawk 21-yard line. On a third and long, Wilson found Shingles to get to the nine-yard line, needing to score Wilson threw but missed her receiver, but Jones was called for illegal contact, giving the Warriors a fresh set of downs. However, Thomas held firm as Jones made a quick pull to stop a Webber touchdown and Kaitlyn Herb got a sack to force another fourth down, which this time the defense stood tall as they forced a turnover on downs.
With about two minutes left in the half, the Night Hawks began driving as Zoe Jackson, Sha’Miyah Coward and Maddie Hougland each had a reception for 15 yards or more to get the ball to the red zone with just 44 seconds left in the half. A couple of plays later, Coleman connected with Scott again for another score to go into half with a comfortable lead.
The second half featured the Night Hawks holding the Warriors at bay to begin the half, forcing a turnover on downs to give the offense excellent field position for their first drive. Thomas’ offense wasted no time as three straight completions led to Coleman’s fifth touchdown of the day as Jackson caught the two-yard pass.
Another stop from the Night Hawk defense brought the offense back on the field, this time led by Alexa Wilson as she used her arm and legs to get to the Warrior four-yard line and capped off the drive with a touchdown pass to Ameari Logan. Webber did put together a scoring drive as Samantha Wilson delivered some solid passes and finished the job on the run, scrambling for a four-yard touchdown early in the final quarter of play.
Thomas notched one more touchdown as Holly Neher found Jackson for the score and Coward climbed the ladder for the interception to ice the game.
Coleman finished 18-20 for 238 yards and five touchdowns. Scott led the Night Hawks in receiving with six catches for 72 yards and two touchdowns while also having eight pulls on defense. Jackson ended with five receptions for 56 yards and three touchdowns.
On the defensive side, Destiny Lockett had eight pulls and a pass breakup while Herb had two pulls, a sack and two pass breakups.
With the win the Night Hawks clinched a share of the Sun Conference regular season title.
