Cairo stays unbeaten in region play

CAIRO – The Cairo Syrupmakers stayed unbeaten in Region 1-3A play this week by whipping the Westover Patriots 11-1 on Tuesday.
Pitcher Eli Cooper was phenomenal on the mound, shutting down the winless Patriots for six innings. He allowed just three hits and one unearned run, along with 11 strikeouts.
Cairo’s offense tallied 10 hits, including three each from Cannon Maige and Gage Schafer. Schafer also delivered a solo home run in the fourth inning that provided the Syrupmakers a 4-1 advantage. Maige led the Syrupmakers with four RBIs, while Jaxon Cox added two hits and three RBIs.
Cairo’s six-run fifth inning propelled the Syrupmakers to their third region win. The two teams were slated to play again on Friday at Westover.
The Syrupmakers’ other game this week was a heartbreaking 4-3 decision at Miller County on Wednesday. Miller County’s one run in the bottom of the seventh inning was a walk-off for the homestanding Pirates.
Cox led Cairo with two RBIs. Cooper, Ty Hatcher, Maige, Cox, Kale Bearden and Schafer each tallied a hit for the Syrupmakers.
Cairo utilized four pitchers in the loss, led by Jared Bell. He pitched 3.2 innings, allowing four hits and three runs with three strikeouts.
